Planning and cost

What is a Mentawai surf trip?

A Mentawai surf trip is usually 7 to 14 nights surfing the reef breaks off West Sumatra, based on a charter boat or a land camp. Most trips start and end in Padang. Read more in the Mentawai surf trip planning guide.

How much does a Mentawai surf trip cost?

Published 2025 to 2026 listings put shared charters at roughly US$1,900 to US$4,400 per person for 10 to 12 days, and land camps at roughly US$150 to US$350 per person per night. Flights, Padang nights and regional fees are usually extra. Read more in cost ranges in the planning guide.

Is a charter or a land camp better for a first trip?

For most first-time visitors a land camp is the easier start: shorter transfers, more space and waves for several levels. Experienced surfers who want to chase swell often prefer a charter. Read more in charter vs land camp.

How long should a Mentawai surf trip be?

Ten to twelve nights gives good protection against a flat or windy spell. One week can work if you are already in Asia and travel in the main season. Read more in how long a surf trip should be.

Is 7 days enough for a Mentawai surf trip?

It is the minimum rather than the ideal. Expect four to five full surf days once transfers from Padang are counted. Read more in the 7-day plan.

Does a Mentawai surf trip include flights?

No. Packages normally start and end in Padang, so international flights and connections to Padang are booked separately. Read more in what a trip includes.

Is the surf levy included in the price?

Sometimes. Many operators list it as a cash extra and some packages include it. Reports on the current amount conflict, so confirm it with your operator before you book. Read more in inclusions and extras.

How far ahead should I book?

For June to August, about 12 months ahead is a sensible rule. Shoulder months may need only a few months, but good boats and camps still fill. Read more in planning a private trip.

Season and getting there

When is the best time for a Mentawai surf trip?

April to October is the main season. June to August usually brings the biggest and most consistent swells, while the shoulder months often have fewer boats and more manageable waves. Read more in seasons in the planning guide.

How do I get to the Mentawai Islands?

Fly to Padang, usually via Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur, then take the fast ferry or your operator’s speedboat. Allow a night in Padang on each side of the island stay. Read more in getting there.

Can I fly to the islands with a surfboard?

Small aircraft to Rokot have very limited baggage allowances and a full board bag may not fit. Most surfers use the ferry or a charter boat instead. Read more in luggage limits.

How many boards should I bring?

Most surfers bring two or three: a daily shortboard, a step-up for bigger days and possibly a spare. Check your boat or camp limit first. Read more in boards and baggage.

Can I avoid crowds in the Mentawais?

To a degree. Travel in the shoulder months, base yourself near lesser-known breaks, surf early and late, and ask operators how many boats share their usual waves. Read more in avoiding crowds.

Is there phone signal in the Mentawai Islands?

Yes in the main towns, especially Tuapejat on Sipora, and in some villages. Coverage is patchy elsewhere and usually absent offshore. Read more in internet and phone coverage.

Surf level and waves

Do I need to be an advanced surfer to go to the Mentawais?

No. Advanced surfers get the most from the famous waves, but intermediates find plenty of good surf and beginners can learn at camps with coaching. The right month and trip format matter most. Read more in the skill level you need.

What is the minimum skill level for a surf charter?

Most charters expect you to paddle into unbroken waves, ride along the face and handle reef breaks on your own. If you still need help catching waves, a land camp with coaching fits better. Read more in skill level by wave.

Can complete beginners learn to surf in the Mentawai Islands?

It is possible with a camp that specialises in first-timers and very small, sheltered conditions, but it is not the easiest place to learn. Many people take lessons on a sandy beach first. Read more in beginner surfing in the Mentawais.

Are the Mentawai Islands too advanced for intermediate surfers?

No. Many waves suit intermediates on the right day. Choose shoulder months, stay near several easier breaks and let your guide steer you away from heavy spots. Read more in the intermediate guide.

Is Macaronis good for intermediate surfers?

On small to medium days it is one of the most approachable world-class waves in the islands. On bigger swells and low tide it gets much more serious. Read more in the Macaronis guide.

Can intermediate surfers ride HT’s?

Some confident intermediates surf it on small, clean days with a guide, but it is generally an advanced wave. Plan backup sessions at more forgiving breaks. Read more in the HT’s guide.

Are the Mentawai Islands safe for women travelling alone?

Many women travel solo here through camps and charters. The islands are generally low-crime; the main risks relate to remoteness, sea crossings and surf conditions. Read more in the guide for women.

Is the Mentawai better than Bali for surfing?

For intermediate to advanced surfers chasing quality reef waves with fewer people, many would say yes. For beginners, mixed groups or short trips, Bali is usually more practical. Read more in Mentawai vs Bali.

Health and safety

Is it safe to travel to the Mentawai Islands?

For most visitors, yes, if you use reputable operators and plan for remoteness. The real risks are sea conditions, injuries far from hospitals and natural hazards rather than crime. Read more in the travel safety guide.

Do I need malaria tablets for a Mentawai surf trip?

Many travellers on short charter or camp trips are advised to rely on strict bite prevention, but advice changes for treks, long stays and some health conditions. Ask a travel clinic about your exact itinerary. Read more in malaria risk explained.

Do I need special travel insurance?

Yes. Choose a policy that clearly covers surfing and medical evacuation from a remote area; standard policies sometimes exclude one or both. Read more in insurance and medical care.

What should I do if there is an earthquake?

If you are near the coast and the shaking is strong or long, move to high ground or inland at once without waiting for a warning. Ask your camp to show you the route on arrival. Read more in earthquake and tsunami safety.
