A Mentawai surf trip from Australia means flying to Padang in West Sumatra with one connection, usually through Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Jakarta, since there are no regular nonstop flights. From Padang you take a ferry, speedboat or charter to the islands. Australians can get a visa on arrival for IDR 500,000, and should allow two travel days each way.
The Mentawai Islands are one of the closest world-class surf regions to Australia, and the timing could hardly be better: the islands’ biggest and most consistent swells arrive during the Australian winter. Planning a Mentawai surf trip from Australia comes down to a handful of decisions: which connection to take, how to handle board bags, how many buffer nights to allow, and whether to choose a boat or a land camp. This page walks through each one.
We are an independent planning guide. We help Australian surfers compare options and connect with operators; we do not sell flights or run boats or resorts.
Flight routes for a Mentawai surf trip from Australia
All routes go through Padang’s Minangkabau International Airport (PDG). There are no consistently scheduled nonstop flights from Perth, Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane to Padang, so plan on one connection.
| Route | Typical flight times | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Via Kuala Lumpur | Perth to KL about 5.5 hours; Sydney to KL about 8.5 to 9 hours; KL to Padang about 1 hour 5 to 20 minutes | AirAsia and Batik Air Malaysia have been reported on KL to Padang; a common choice from Perth |
| Via Singapore | Singapore to Padang about 1 hour 25 minutes | Scoot has operated nonstop to Padang; frequency varies by season |
| Via Jakarta | Domestic connection to Padang | Useful with Indonesian domestic carriers; allow time if you change terminals or tickets |
| Via Bali | No regular nonstop Bali to Padang service confirmed | Usually connects through Jakarta; total travel commonly 5 to 9 hours or more |
Schedules and carriers change between seasons, so check the airline timetable for your exact dates. If you book separate tickets, leave a generous connection window or overnight in the hub city, because a missed connection can also mean a missed boat.
Visa, surf fee and entry basics
- Visa on arrival: Australian passport holders are eligible for Indonesia’s visa on arrival or e-VOA. The government fee is IDR 500,000, normally for 30 days with a possible 30-day extension. Card or processing charges may apply.
- Passport validity: check that your passport meets Indonesia’s validity rules for your travel dates.
- Mentawai surf fee: foreign surfers pay a regional fee, reported at IDR 2,000,000 for up to 15 days after a 2024 increase. Some operators collect it for you.
- Travel insurance: choose a policy that covers surfing and medical evacuation, since serious medical care is usually on the mainland in Padang.
Entry rules and fees can change, so confirm them shortly before you travel through official Indonesian government sources and your operator.
Best time to go from Australia
| Months | Mentawai surf | For Australian travellers |
|---|---|---|
| April to May | Swell building, often head-high to overhead | Good value and quality; overlaps with some autumn school holidays |
| June to August | Peak consistency and size, southeast trades | Matches the Australian winter; most popular and books out first |
| September to October | Consistent, swells gradually easing | Often excellent with a little less demand |
| November to March | Smaller, less consistent, wetter | Fits the Australian summer holidays; better for beginners, families and relaxed trips |

From Padang to the islands
Once in Padang, the final leg depends on your trip type.
- Charter boat: the operator usually collects you in Padang and departs from the harbour, often overnight, with the crossing taking several hours or more depending on your first destination.
- Land camp: many camps arrange a speedboat directly from Padang or a pick-up from Tua Pejat after the public fast ferry, which commonly takes about three to four hours.
- Light aircraft: small planes have served Rokot on Sipora in about 40 minutes, but baggage limits are tight for board bags.
Plan at least one night in Padang on arrival, and ideally one on departure too. Weather can delay boats, and you do not want your international flight to depend on a single sea crossing.
A sample door-to-door plan
- Day 1: fly from your Australian city to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Jakarta, then on to Padang. Overnight in Padang.
- Day 2: transfer to the islands by charter, speedboat or ferry; evening surf if you arrive early.
- Days 3 to 11: surf, rest and repeat. Nine surf days is a good target.
- Day 12: return to Padang and overnight.
- Day 13: fly home.
Most Australians book 10 to 12 nights in the islands, which balances leave and cost against the travel time. A shorter seven-night stay works if your leave is limited, but every swell missed matters more.
Boards and baggage
Board bag fees and weight limits vary between airlines and fare types, and they can apply separately on each sector if you book separate tickets. Before you book, check the sports equipment allowance on both the international and the Padang leg. Many travellers carry two or three boards in a coffin bag, with fins, wax, a ding repair kit and spare leashes. If you are flying a light aircraft to Sipora, check limits carefully or plan to take the ferry.
What it typically costs
Island costs vary by operator, season and style. As typical 2025 to 2026 ranges, shared charters run around US$170 to US$500 per person per night, land-based surf resorts around US$250 to US$600, and simpler guesthouse bases around US$50 to US$150 including shared boats. Add return airfares, Padang hotels, board bag fees, insurance and the surf fee. Our surf charter cost breakdown explains how boat pricing is structured.
How to choose your trip
- Pick your season by level: June to August for experienced surfers, November to March for beginners and families.
- Choose a charter for variety and swell chasing, or a land camp for comfort and non-surfing partners.
- Build in buffer nights in Padang on both ends.
- Check what the package includes: Padang transfers, meals, guiding, fuel and the surf fee.
- Book early for winter dates, particularly for groups.
