A Mentawai surf trip for women can be a mixed-group charter or camp, or a women-only surf retreat, which several operators run as scheduled departures with coaching, small groups and boat access to the waves. The islands are generally low-crime; the main risks are remoteness, reef and sea conditions. Choose an established operator and dress modestly in villages and Padang.

Women have been surfing the Mentawai Islands for as long as surfers have been going there, but the way many women book has changed. Alongside mixed charters and camps, there are now women’s surf retreats and women-only boat trips in the islands, often with coaching and yoga built in. Whether you are travelling solo, with friends or as part of an organised group, a Mentawai surf trip for women follows the same basic rules as any trip here, plus a few specific considerations around culture, safety and choosing the right format.

Women’s surf retreat Mentawai options: three ways to go

FormatWhat it usually looks likeBest for
Women-only surf retreat at a campScheduled dates, small group, coaching, often yoga, meals and daily boat tripsSolo women, progressing surfers, those who want a structured week
Women-only charterA boat booked for a group of women on set dates, with surf guidingConfident surfers wanting to move between breaks
Mixed camp or charterStandard trip open to all guestsWomen travelling with partners or friends, flexible dates

Women-only Mentawai surf trips are generally run as specific departures rather than year-round programmes, and they tend to fill early because group sizes are small. Some are hosted at camps in the Playgrounds area or on small islands nearby; others are charters. Before booking, confirm the dates, group size, what coaching is included, whether “women-only” also applies to guides and staff, and the cancellation terms.

Choosing a Mentawai surf trip for women by level

Many women’s retreats are built around progression, which makes them a good fit for intermediate surfers and confident beginners. A mixed charter chasing big swell suits experienced surfers better.

  • Newer surfers: look for a camp-based retreat with daily coaching and access to softer waves. Our guide to Mentawai surf lessons for beginners explains what good coaching on reef waves looks like.
  • Intermediates: a retreat with video analysis and a base near several friendlier breaks, such as Playgrounds, is ideal. The Mentawai surf trip for intermediate surfers guide lists suitable waves and months.
  • Advanced surfers: a women-only charter, or a mixed boat with a captain who will chase swell, gives you the most variety.

Culture and dress

The journey usually starts in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra. The Minangkabau majority there is predominantly Muslim and public dress is generally more conservative than at a surf camp. Clothing that covers shoulders and knees, such as loose trousers or a long skirt with a light shirt, is most comfortable in town.

The Mentawai Islands have their own Indigenous culture and a largely Christian population, with Muslim and traditional practices too. Swimwear is normal at camps and on boats, but cover up when walking through villages, visiting a church or spending time with families. Ask your host about local expectations; it is always appreciated.

Safety for solo female travellers

The islands are generally regarded as low-crime. The practical risks for women are the same as for anyone: sea crossings, reef injuries, weather delays, limited medical care and patchy communications. A few habits make a big difference:

  • Book organised transfers from Padang rather than arranging unfamiliar boats on arrival.
  • Choose accommodation with reliable staff, lockable storage and a clear emergency plan.
  • Do not surf unfamiliar breaks alone; go out with a guide or a buddy.
  • Share your itinerary and operator contacts with someone at home.
  • Use normal city precautions in Padang, especially for late-night transport.
  • Carry insurance that covers surfing and remote evacuation.

Operators sometimes describe the islands as safe for solo women, and many women travel solo here without problems, but there are no published female-specific safety statistics. Treat it like any remote destination and plan accordingly.

What to pack

The standard surf trip list applies, with a few additions that women frequently recommend:

  • Two or three secure swimsuits or surf suits that stay put in heavy water, plus a long-sleeved rash vest or surf suit for sun.
  • Reef booties for reef walking and shore entries.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a zinc stick; supplies on the islands are limited.
  • A light long-sleeved shirt and loose trousers or a long skirt for Padang and village visits.
  • Menstrual products for the whole trip, since choice on the islands is limited. Menstrual cups or period swimwear are popular on surf trips.
  • Any regular medication, plus a basic first-aid and wound-care kit.

For sun and reef gear, see our post on what to wear surfing in Mentawai.

When to go

The main surf season runs roughly April to October, with June to September usually the most consistent. Many women’s retreats are scheduled in the shoulder months, such as March to May or September to October, when sizes are often more manageable and boats less crowded. If you are booking a retreat, the dates will be set by the organiser; if you are booking a mixed trip, pick the window that matches your level.

Quick facts

  • Formats: women-only camp retreats, women-only charters, or mixed trips.
  • Women-only trips are usually scheduled departures with small groups.
  • Gateway: Padang, then boat or ferry.
  • Dress modestly in Padang and in villages.
  • The islands are generally low-crime; plan for remoteness.
  • Bring menstrual products and sunscreen for the whole trip.

Frequently asked questions

Are there women-only surf trips in the Mentawai Islands?

Yes. Several operators advertise women-only surf retreats and charters on scheduled dates, often with coaching and yoga. Availability changes each season.

Are the Mentawai Islands safe for women travelling alone?

Many women travel solo here through camps and charters. The islands are generally low-crime, and the main risks relate to remoteness, sea crossings and surf conditions.

What should women wear in Padang and the islands?

Cover shoulders and knees in Padang and when visiting villages or churches. Swimwear is fine at camps and on boats.

Do I need to be an experienced surfer for a women’s retreat?

Not always. Many retreats welcome confident beginners and intermediates and adapt sessions to each guest. Check the stated level before booking.

When are women’s surf retreats usually held?

Dates vary by organiser, but many fall in the shoulder months either side of the peak season.
