A Mentawai surf trip for advanced surfers is built around heavy, hollow reefs such as Lance’s Right, Rifles, Bank Vaults, Kandui Left, Hideaways, Iceland and Macaronis on size. Go between May and September for the most consistent overhead swells, choose a charter if you want to chase the swell or a land camp for one region, and pack a step-up quiver.

For experienced surfers, the Mentawai Islands are less a holiday than a test: fast take-offs, long barrels and shallow coral, often in water so clear you can count the coral heads. A Mentawai surf trip for advanced surfers rewards preparation. The right season, base, boards and safety plan decide whether you come home with the best waves of your life or a week of dressings. This page sets out the key waves by region, compares charters and land camps, and lists the preparation that matters most.

We are an independent planning guide. We do not run boats or camps; we help you compare options and connect with operators who match your plans.

Best season for advanced surfers

April to October is the main season for southern hemisphere groundswell. June to August usually brings the biggest and most consistent surf, commonly overhead to double overhead during strong swells, with southeast trade winds that suit many breaks in the mornings. May and September are popular with experienced surfers who want quality with slightly lower demand. November to March is smaller and less consistent, though good swells still arrive.

MonthsWhat advanced surfers can expect
April to MaySwell building, regular overhead days, lighter winds
June to AugustPeak size and consistency; busiest line-ups
September to OctoberConsistent, slowly easing; often excellent
November to MarchSmaller and less reliable; quieter, occasional quality swells

Charter or land camp?

Charter boat

A charter is the classic choice for experienced surfers. The boat moves overnight to whichever region suits the swell and wind, so you can surf the Playgrounds on one swell and Sipora or the southern islands on the next. The trade-offs are less space, more motion, and line-ups shared with other boats and land guests. Ask any operator about their typical route, the size of their tender, how many surfers share it, and how they decide where to go.

Land-based camp

A land camp puts you close to one group of waves. Camps in the Playgrounds give access to Rifles, Kandui Left, Bank Vaults and nearby breaks; camps around Katiet sit next to Lance’s Right and Lance’s Left; and a camp at Silabu faces Macaronis. Staying on land lets you time sessions to tide and wind, and gives you a stable bed between sessions. You give up the freedom to move between regions.

If one wave is your priority, see our dedicated planning pages for an HTs Mentawai surf trip and a Macaronis surf trip.

Typical costs

Prices vary by operator, season, cabin or room and group size. As typical 2025 to 2026 ranges, shared charters run around US$170 to US$500 per person per night and are usually sold as 10 to 12 day trips, while land-based surf resorts are around US$250 to US$600 per person per night. Private boat hire for a group can be competitive per person if you fill every berth. Add flights to Padang, hotels, board fees, insurance and the regional surf fee, reported at IDR 2,000,000 per foreign surfer for up to 15 days. Our surf charter cost breakdown explains boat pricing in more detail.

Quiver and gear

  • Daily driver: your standard shortboard for medium days.
  • Step-up: a slightly longer board with more volume for fast take-offs on overhead days.
  • Backup: a spare in case of a snapped board, which happens on shallow reefs.
  • Spares: fins, leashes, wax, ding repair kit.
  • Protection: reef booties for walking over coral, rash vests, and a helmet on heavier days.

Safety for advanced surfers

Experience does not make reef softer. Most serious injuries on Mentawai trips are reef cuts, impact injuries and infections that start small.

  1. Learn the channel and the safe exit before your first wave at each break.
  2. Pay attention to tide; several of the heaviest waves shallow out dramatically on low tide.
  3. Clean every cut the same day, keep it covered, and watch for signs of infection.
  4. Ask your operator about first aid kit, training and communication equipment on board.
  5. Carry insurance that covers surfing and medical evacuation, since serious care is usually in Padang.

How to choose your trip

  1. Decide between variety (charter) and depth on one region (land camp).
  2. Pick your dates: June to August for maximum size, May or September for quality with fewer people.
  3. Choose your crew carefully; a group of similar ability makes a charter far more enjoyable.
  4. Book early for peak months, especially private boats.
  5. Confirm inclusions: Padang transfers, fuel, guiding and the surf fee.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best waves for advanced surfers in the Mentawais?

Rifles, Kandui Left, Bank Vaults, Hideaways, Lance’s Right, Iceland and Macaronis on size are among the waves most experienced surfers aim for. The best wave on any day depends on swell direction, tide and wind.

Is a charter better than a land camp for experienced surfers?

A charter gives you more breaks and the ability to follow the swell. A land camp gives more comfort and time at one group of waves. Many experienced surfers alternate between the two on different trips.

When is the biggest surf in the Mentawai Islands?

Usually June to August, when southern hemisphere groundswells are most consistent. Big swells can arrive any time from April to October.

How many boards should I bring?

Two to three is common: a shortboard, a step-up and a spare. Check airline board bag limits before you pack.

Do advanced surfers still need a guide?

A local guide or experienced skipper helps you pick the right wave and tide, find the channel and avoid hazards. On shallow reefs this matters at every level.
