A Mentawai surf trip for intermediate surfers works best in the shoulder months, March to April and October to November, based near Playgrounds or with a charter that can move between breaks. Waves such as Four Bobs, Beng Bengs, A-Frames, Burgerworld and small days at Lance’s Left suit intermediates, while HTs, Bank Vaults and Kandui are best left to experts.

Intermediate surfers are often told the Mentawai Islands are “only for experts.” That is not quite right. The islands have world-class heavy waves, but they also have plenty of reef breaks that are friendly on the right day, and the variety means a well-planned Mentawai surf trip for intermediate surfers can be the best progression trip of your life. The key is matching three things: the right season, the right base, and the right waves for your level on any given day.

By “intermediate” we mean you can paddle out unassisted, catch unbroken waves, turn both ways and handle waves around head high on forgiving breaks. If that sounds like you, read on.

Where to base a Mentawai surf trip for intermediate surfers

Location matters more than the boat or the room. You want a base with several easier waves close by, so that on a big swell you still have somewhere to surf.

Playgrounds

The Playgrounds cluster, between southern Siberut and northern Sipora, is often the first suggestion for intermediates. Four Bobs, Beng Bengs and A-Frames are close together, and Burgerworld is nearby. When the swell is large, more sheltered corners still offer manageable waves, while the heavier spots like Bank Vaults are there to watch.

Sipora

Around Katiet on Sipora, Lance’s Left can suit intermediates on smaller days, though it is commonly rated intermediate to advanced and changes a lot with swell and tide. Our Sipora island surf trip guide covers the island’s options and how to get there.

Charter boats

A charter lets the captain read the forecast and park you where the waves fit your level. For intermediates, tell the operator clearly what you want, because many charter itineraries are built around chasing the biggest swells.

Difficulty changes with swell, tide, wind and crowd, so use this as a starting point rather than a rule.

When to go

The main swell season runs roughly from April to October, with June to September, and July and August in particular, producing the largest and most reliable surf. That is fantastic for experts and can be a lot for intermediates, especially on the marquee waves.

The shoulder months suit most intermediates better. March to April and October to November tend to mix smaller fun days with occasional solid swells, and there are usually fewer boats around. Some guides also suggest late April to May and September to early October. December to February can be smaller and more forgiving, but wind and consistency are less predictable.

MonthsFit for intermediatesWhy
March to AprilVery goodModerate size, thinner crowds
MayGoodBuilding swells; still a mix of sizes
June to SeptemberFair to goodMost consistent, but bigger and busier; choose sheltered waves
October to NovemberVery goodFun sizes, fewer boats
December to FebruaryMixedSmaller surf, more variable wind and weather

How to get the most out of the trip

  • Tell the operator your real level. A good guide will plan sessions around it. Overstating your level helps nobody.
  • Book coaching or video analysis if offered. Some camps include it; it accelerates progression on reef waves.
  • Surf the tide windows. Many reefs are friendlier at mid to higher tide. Ask before each session.
  • Bring the right boards. A slightly longer, higher-volume board than your home shortboard helps on take-offs; a spare is worth the excess baggage.
  • Build paddle fitness first. Two sessions a day for a week is far more than most people surf at home.
  • Protect your skin. Booties for reef walking, a long-sleeved rash vest and reef-safe sunscreen.

One more habit worth building: sit and watch for fifteen minutes before every session. Count the sets, note where the guide and the regulars sit, and look for where waves close out over shallow reef. On reef breaks, positioning is most of the battle, and intermediates who take the time to read a lineup catch better waves and take fewer hits than those who paddle straight out.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Mentawai Islands too advanced for intermediate surfers?

No. Many waves suit intermediates on the right day. Choose shoulder months, base yourself near several easier breaks, and let your guide steer you away from the heavy spots.

What are the best Mentawai surf trips for intermediate surfers?

Generally a land camp in Playgrounds or a charter that commits to an intermediate-focused itinerary, timed for March to April or October to November.

Can I surf HTs as an intermediate?

HTs, also known as Lance’s Right, is an expert wave over shallow reef. Intermediates are better off watching from the channel and surfing Lance’s Left on a small day instead.

Should intermediates choose a boat or a camp?

Camps give you a consistent base with easy access to friendlier waves. Boats offer flexibility but sometimes chase bigger swells. Either can work if the operator understands your level.

Do I need reef booties?

They are optional in the water but useful for walking on reef and entering from shore. Many intermediates appreciate them on lower tides.
