Mentawai surf lessons for beginners usually run as two-hour sessions: a land briefing on safety, reef awareness and pop-ups, then coached water time on a soft-top in a sheltered inside section or beach break. Small groups of one coach to two students are common. One Katiet resort listed about US$70 per lesson with a board in 2025.

Taking Mentawai surf lessons for beginners is a different experience from learning on a sandy beach in Bali or Australia. The water is warm and clear, the line-ups away from the famous breaks can be quiet, and the coaching tends to be close and personal. But the reef underneath raises the importance of good instruction. This page explains how lessons are structured, what you can expect to learn in a week, how private and group lessons compare, what they typically cost, and how to choose a coach.

We are an independent planning guide. We do not run a surf school; we help you understand your options and connect with camps and coaches that fit your goals.

How Mentawai surf lessons for beginners are structured

Most lessons follow a similar shape, whatever the camp.

On land

Your coach starts with an ocean briefing: how the reef works, where the channel is, how tides change the spot, and how to fall safely. You then practise the pop-up, foot position and paddling posture on the sand or deck until it becomes automatic. Expect this part to be longer in your first lesson and shorter later in the week.

In the water

You head out on a large soft-top to a sheltered inside section, lagoon edge or beach break chosen for the day’s conditions. Early sessions focus on catching white water and standing up. Later sessions move to small unbroken waves, paddling into them yourself and steering along the face. On reef, the coach stays close, calls waves for you and tells you when to stay off them.

Review

Many camps finish with feedback, and some film sessions so you can see your stance and timing. Video review is one of the fastest ways to fix habits early, so ask whether it is offered.

What you can learn in a week

Progress depends on fitness, confidence, conditions and how many sessions you get. As a rough guide for someone starting from zero or near zero:

  • Sessions 1 to 3: safe paddling, popping up on white water, falling correctly, basic ocean awareness.
  • Sessions 4 to 6: standing up consistently, steering, catching the first small unbroken waves with help.
  • Sessions 7 to 10: paddling into small green waves yourself, angling along the face, beginning to understand priority and etiquette.

Two sessions a day are realistic for many people early in a trip, but sore shoulders and reef scrapes add up. Plan a rest day midweek. For guidance on whether the islands suit your current level, see our page on beginner surfing in the Mentawai Islands.

Typical lesson costs

Lesson prices are set by each camp and change by season. One published 2025 reference from a Katiet resort was around US$70 per person for a two-hour lesson including a board. Private lessons, boat transfers to the lesson spot and video coaching may cost more. Some camps include coaching in their package, which can work out cheaper than paying per session. The camp itself typically costs around US$250 to US$600 per person per night for full-service packages, or around US$50 to US$150 for simpler guesthouse stays. Always ask for current written rates.

Best time for lessons

November to March usually brings smaller, softer surf, with December to February the gentlest months. This is the most comfortable time for lessons. The main season from April to October brings bigger and more consistent swell, which suits improvers better than true beginners, although sheltered spots can still be found on some days. Weather in the smaller season is wetter, so pack a light rain layer.

How to choose a coach or surf school

  1. Ask about experience with beginners on reef. Teaching on coral requires different judgement from teaching on sand.
  2. Confirm the ratio. Ask how many students each coach takes in the water.
  3. Ask where lessons happen. A clear answer names the inside sections or beach breaks used and the backup plan for big swell days.
  4. Check boards and safety kit. Large soft-tops, leashes in good condition and a first aid kit on the boat are basics.
  5. Look at the full camp package. Lessons work best when your accommodation, meals and boat transfers fit around them.

If you are still choosing where to stay, our page on choosing a Mentawai surf camp for beginners gives a full checklist.

Preparing for your lessons

  • Practise pop-ups on the floor at home for a few weeks before you travel.
  • Build paddle fitness with swimming; it makes every session longer and safer.
  • Pack reef booties, two rash vests, reef-safe sunscreen and a hat.
  • Bring antiseptic, dressings and waterproof plasters for reef cuts.
  • Buy travel insurance that covers surfing and medical evacuation.

Quick facts

  • Typical lesson length: about two hours
  • Common ratio: one coach to two students
  • Boards: large soft-tops supplied by most beginner-focused camps
  • Reference price: around US$70 per two-hour lesson at one Katiet resort (2025)
  • Best season for lessons: November to March
  • Where lessons happen: sheltered inside reefs, lagoon edges and beach breaks

Frequently asked questions

Can I take surf lessons in the Mentawai Islands as a complete beginner?

Yes, at camps that teach beginners regularly and choose very small, sheltered conditions. If you would rather start on sand, a few lessons at home first will make your Mentawai sessions more productive.

How much do Mentawai surf lessons cost?

Prices vary by camp. As a reference, one Katiet resort listed about US$70 per person for a two-hour lesson with a board in 2025. Private lessons and video coaching usually cost more.

Are lessons on reef dangerous?

Reef adds risk, which is why coaching matters. Good coaches choose deeper sections, preferred tides and small swells, and teach you to fall flat and protect your head.

How many lessons do I need?

Most beginners benefit from daily lessons across a week. Ten or more sessions give you a real chance of riding small green waves on your own.

Do I need to book lessons in advance?

Yes, especially if you want private coaching or are travelling in a group. Camps plan coaches and boats around bookings.
