Sipora Island Surf Trip: Waves, Bases and Getting There

In this guide (9 sections)
A Sipora island surf trip puts you on the most accessible island in the Mentawais, with Tua Pejat as the transport hub. Fast ferries from Padang take roughly three to four hours, and small planes fly to Rokot. Southern Sipora around Katiet holds Lance’s Right and Lance’s Left, while the northwest offers Telescopes, Iceland and Scarecrows.
For many surfers, Sipora is the most practical way into the Mentawai Islands. It has the regency’s main town, a scheduled ferry link to the mainland, a small airstrip and a cluster of quality reefs at both ends of the island. A Sipora island surf trip can be a budget homestay week in Tua Pejat, a comfortable land-based camp near Katiet, or the first leg of a boat trip. This page explains how the island is laid out, which waves sit where, how to get there and how to choose a base.
We are an independent trip-planning guide, not an operator. We help you understand the options and connect with the camps and boats that fit your plans.
How Sipora is laid out for surfers
Sipora sits in the centre of the chain, between Siberut to the north and the Pagai islands to the south. Think of it as two surf zones linked by the main town.
Tua Pejat: the hub
Tua Pejat, on the island’s northeast side, is the administrative centre of the Mentawai Islands Regency and the ferry port for Sipora. It has shops, guesthouses, a regional hospital (RSUD Mentawai), and local boats for hire. Surfers on a budget often base themselves here and share boats to waves in the northwest of the island.
Northwest Sipora
The northwest coast holds a group of left-handers that are well known to charter crews and land-based surfers alike. Telescopes is a long, high-quality left. Iceland is a heavier left with slab-like sections that suits experienced surfers. Scarecrows is commonly grouped with these two. Day trips from Tua Pejat are possible when conditions and boat arrangements allow.
South Sipora and Katiet
At the island’s southern end, the village of Katiet faces two of the most famous waves in the archipelago. Lance’s Right, also called HT’s or Hollow Trees, is a fast, barrelling right over shallow reef. Lance’s Left is a long left with several sections, from a hollow outside to more open inside walls. Bintangs, a powerful right, is in the same general area. Several land-based surf camps operate around Katiet, and many charters stop here.
Sipora surf breaks at a glance
| Break | Area | Direction | Typical level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lance’s Right (HT’s) | Katiet, south Sipora | Right, hollow reef | Advanced to expert |
| Lance’s Left | Katiet, south Sipora | Left, long reef with sections | Intermediate to advanced |
| Bintangs | Near Katiet | Right, powerful | Advanced |
| Telescopes | Northwest Sipora | Left, long and high quality | Intermediate to advanced |
| Iceland | Northwest Sipora | Left, heavy with slab sections | Advanced |
| Scarecrows | Northwest Sipora | Reef break grouped with Telescopes | Intermediate to advanced |
Wave levels are a guide only. Every break here is a reef, and the right call on any day depends on swell, tide and wind. A good local guide matters more than any table.
Getting to Sipora
Every Sipora surf trip begins in Padang, West Sumatra. From there you have two main options.
- Fast ferry to Tua Pejat. The Mentawai Fast service runs from Padang to Tua Pejat on several days a week, often with early-morning departures. The crossing is commonly quoted at about three to four hours, though stops and weather can stretch the day. Schedules change, so confirm departure days close to your trip.
- Small plane to Rokot. Rokot Airport (RKI) on Sipora has had scheduled light-aircraft service from Padang, with a flight time of about 40 minutes. Baggage limits on small aircraft are tight, which matters if you travel with a board bag, so check allowances and frequency before relying on it.
Land-based camps in south Sipora usually collect guests from Tua Pejat or arrange a direct speedboat from Padang. For a full breakdown of routes into Padang, see the travel section of our Mentawai surf trip planning guide.
Best time for a Sipora island surf trip
Sipora follows the same broad pattern as the rest of the chain. April to October brings the most consistent southern hemisphere swell, with June to August generally the biggest and most reliable stretch, helped by southeast trade winds. November to March is smaller, wetter and less consistent, with surf commonly in the one to four foot range and more variable winds. That quieter season is worth considering if you are an improving surfer or want fewer people in the water, while the main season suits those chasing Lance’s Right and the heavier lefts.
Choosing your Sipora base
| Base | Style | Typical cost (2025 to 2026) | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tua Pejat guesthouse | Simple rooms, shared local boats | Around US$50 to US$150 per person per night including boats; rooms alone can be cheaper | Budget surfers, flexible travellers |
| Katiet land-based camp | Meals, guiding and boat access to south Sipora waves | Commonly around US$250 to US$600 per person per night for packages | Surfers who want Lance’s Right and Left on their doorstep |
| Charter boat starting nearby | Floating base that moves with the swell | Shared charters around US$170 to US$500 per person per night | Groups wanting several regions in one trip |
Prices vary by operator, season, room type and what is included, so use these ranges for budgeting rather than as quotes. Ask whether transfers from Padang, fuel, surf guiding and the regional surf fee are included. The surf fee was reported at IDR 2,000,000 per foreign surfer for up to 15 days after a 2024 increase; check the current rate before you go. If you only have a week, our 7-day Mentawai surf trip plan shows how a Sipora land camp fits a short stay.
How to decide
- If Lance’s Right is the reason you are going, stay in south Sipora. Being able to watch the reef and surf the right tide window makes a big difference on a wave this shallow.
- If you want variety at low cost, a Tua Pejat base with shared boats gives access to several northwest breaks, but expect longer days on the water and more dependence on weather.
- If you are travelling as a group of four or more, compare the per-person cost of a camp with a short charter. The numbers can be closer than you expect.
- If a partner or family member is not surfing, a Katiet camp with snorkelling and lagoon activities usually works better than a town guesthouse.
Telescopes: Sipora’s long left
Telescopes is one of the best-known waves on Sipora and a common reason surfers choose the island. It breaks off Cape Kinilok on the northwest coast, near Mapadegat beach, and it is reached by boat. From camps on the northwest coast the run is short, and from Tuapejat it is usually well under half an hour by fast boat, depending on where you leave from and the sea state. Icelands is close by, Scarecrows lies further south, and several other North Sipora reefs are in range, which gives a base in this area options when the swell or wind shifts.
| Condition | What spot guides generally report |
|---|---|
| Wave | Long left over coral reef, with barrel sections on bigger days |
| Best swell | South-west to west groundswell |
| Best wind | East to south-east |
| Size range | Roughly 2 to 3 feet up to 8 feet or more |
| Tide | Mid tide is often suggested; follow your guide’s call |
| Season | Most consistent from about April to October |
On smaller, cleaner days Telescopes often suits confident intermediates who can take off on unbroken waves and ride a reef face. As it grows, the faster sections and shallow inside make it an advanced wave, which makes it a good fit for mixed-level groups. Bring an everyday shortboard and a slightly longer step-up, watch a few sets from the channel before paddling out, and ask your guide where the shallow end sections are.

Frequently asked questions
Is Sipora a good island for a first Mentawai surf trip?
Yes, for many surfers it is the easiest island to reach and has a wide choice of accommodation. Most of its famous waves are for intermediate and advanced surfers, so beginners should choose a camp that can find softer inside sections and should travel in the smaller season.
How long is the ferry from Padang to Sipora?
The fast ferry to Tua Pejat is usually quoted at about three to four hours of sailing. Allow a full travel day, because departure times, stops and sea conditions vary.
Can I surf Telescopes from Tua Pejat?
Day trips are possible by local boat when the weather cooperates, and many budget surfers do this. Arrange the boat in advance and expect costs to be shared among the group.
What is the difference between a Sipora surf trip and a charter?
A Sipora surf trip is usually land-based, so you surf the waves within reach of your base. A charter moves between islands to follow the swell. Land stays suit people who want comfort and a fixed routine; charters suit groups chasing variety.
Do I need to pay a surf fee on Sipora?
Foreign surfers in the Mentawai Islands Regency pay a regional surf fee. It was reported at IDR 2,000,000 for up to 15 days from 2024, but confirm the amount and payment method before travelling.
