How long should a Mentawai surf trip be? For most surfers, 10 to 12 nights in the islands is the sweet spot: long enough to catch more than one swell, short enough to stay fresh. Resorts often set a minimum of around 7 nights. On top of that, budget 3 to 4 extra days for international flights, a Padang overnight and boat transfers.

Trip length is one of the first decisions you make and one of the hardest to change later. Flights, boat berths and resort rooms are all booked around it. This guide explains how long should a Mentawai surf trip be for different goals and budgets, how much travel time to add on each side, and why the number of nights in the water matters more than the number of days on your calendar. If you are still deciding what kind of mentawai adventure you want, start here.

What the market actually offers

Charter boats and land camps build their schedules in fairly standard blocks, so your choice is partly made for you.

  • Surf charters usually run around 9 to 14 nights, with 10 to 12 nights the most common.
  • Surf resorts and land camps often require a minimum stay of around 7 nights, and some use fixed 10 or 11-night schedules in the busy months.
  • Shorter stays of 4 or 5 nights are possible at some land camps, especially outside peak season, but the travel overhead makes them poor value for long-haul visitors.

Minimums and fixed changeover days vary by operator and season, so check them before you book flights.

Why 10 nights is the number most people land on

Surf trips depend on swell, and swell arrives in pulses. A good pulse might give you a few days of strong waves, followed by a smaller spell before the next one arrives. On a short trip you are betting everything on that timing. On a 10-night trip you are much more likely to see the peak of at least one pulse and some fun smaller days around it.

The second reason is your body. Surfing two or three sessions a day in tropical heat over reef is hard work. Many surfers find their best waves come on days four to eight, once their paddling fitness and confidence have settled in and before fatigue and small reef cuts start to add up. A mentawai surf trip 10 days long gives you that middle stretch with time to spare.

The third reason is simple economics. Your international flight is the same price whether you stay 7 nights or 12, so the cost per surf day falls as the trip gets longer.

The travel days nobody counts

The islands are not the end of a single flight. Almost everyone arrives through Padang on Sumatra, then continues by sea. Budget these pieces on top of your nights in the islands:

  1. Flights to Padang. From Australia, Europe or North America this usually means at least one connection, often in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore.
  2. A Padang overnight. Most operators recommend arriving the day before departure. Ferries and charters leave early, and a delayed flight on the day can mean missing the boat.
  3. The crossing. The public fast ferry from Padang to Tuapejat on Sipora takes around 3 to 4 hours. Charter boats that cross on their own usually take around 10 to 14 hours overnight, depending on the vessel, route and sea.
  4. The return. Plan to be back in Padang the day before a long-haul flight, plus an extra day if your connections are complex.

In practice, long-haul visitors should allow at least 3 to 4 calendar days of travel and transfers around the trip. A 10-night charter from Europe or the US often becomes a 15 or 16-day holiday.

Sample calendars

From Australia, 10-night charter

Day 1 fly to Padang with a connection and stay overnight. Day 2 board and cross. Days 2 to 12 surf. Day 12 or 13 return to Padang. Day 13 or 14 fly home. Total around 13 to 14 days. Australian surfers have the shortest flights and can often fit a full trip into two weeks of leave.

From the US or Europe, 10-night land camp

Days 1 and 2 long-haul flights and arrival in Padang. Day 3 ferry to the islands. Days 3 to 13 surf. Day 13 back to Padang. Days 14 and 15 fly home, crossing time zones. Total around 15 to 16 days. See our post on the Mentawai surf trip from the United States for flight planning.

How season and skill change the ideal length

In the main season from April to October, waves are more consistent, so a 7-night stay has a better chance of delivering. In the smaller months from November to March, surf is generally less consistent, and a longer stay helps make up for flatter days.

Skill matters too. Beginners usually tire faster and progress best over a longer, steadier stay with lessons. Advanced surfers chasing a specific wave, such as the left at Macaronis, may want a longer window so they can wait for the right swell and tide. Our Macaronis surf trip guide explains how that wave responds to different conditions.

Quick facts

  • Most charters: around 10 to 12 nights; common range 9 to 14 nights.
  • Common resort minimum: around 7 nights.
  • Padang to Tuapejat fast ferry: roughly 3 to 4 hours.
  • Overnight charter crossing: roughly 10 to 14 hours.
  • Add 3 to 4 days of travel for long-haul trips.
  • Arrive in Padang the day before your boat or ferry.

Frequently asked questions

Is one week enough for the Mentawais?

It can be, especially if you are already in Asia and travel in the main season. The risk is that one flat or windy spell takes up a large share of your trip. If you are flying from far away, 10 nights or more gives you much better odds.

Is two weeks too long?

Not if you plan rest days. Many surfers on 14-night trips take a lighter day every few days to let reef cuts heal and muscles recover. Two weeks also leaves room to try both a boat and a land base.

How many surf sessions can I expect per day?

On a good day, two or three sessions are typical, often with an early morning session and an afternoon one. It depends on conditions, tides and your energy.

Should I add a buffer day before my international flight?

Yes. Sea conditions, ferry schedules and domestic flights can all shift. Being in Padang the day before your long-haul flight is the usual advice.

Does trip length affect price per night?

Some operators price longer stays more favourably, while others charge a fixed nightly rate. Ask what is included, because transfers and the regional surf levy are often charged separately. Our post on what is included in a Mentawai surf trip explains what to check.
