Mentawai surf trip luggage limits are set by each leg: your international airline, the domestic flight to Padang, and the boat or ferry to the islands. Surfboards almost always count as sports or oversized baggage with extra fees. The Mentawai Fast ferry charges board bags by weight, and small Susi Air flights to Sipora allow only around 10 kg checked.

Getting three boards from your garage to a reef in the Mentawais involves at least three different baggage policies, sometimes four. Each one has its own weight limits, size rules and fees, and the strictest leg decides what you can actually bring. This guide walks through Mentawai surf trip luggage limits leg by leg, with the figures that have been reported and the questions you should ask before paying anything.

A note on numbers: airline and ferry policies change often, and the fees below are reported figures rather than guaranteed tariffs. Confirm the current amounts with each carrier when you book.

International flights

This is where most of your luggage cost sits. Policies vary enormously between airlines and even between fare types on the same airline. Some include a board bag within your checked allowance if it fits the weight limit; others charge a flat sports equipment fee per sector; low-cost carriers often sell sports baggage as an add-on that is cheaper online than at the airport.

  • Check the maximum length for sports equipment. Airlines set their own caps, and some rule out longboards or long coffin bags.
  • Check the per-piece weight limit. Coffin bags with three or four boards can easily exceed it.
  • Check whether the fee is per sector or per journey, because a three-flight itinerary can triple it.
  • Book the sports baggage in advance where possible.

If you are flying from Australia, our Mentawai surf trip from Australia guide covers the common routings to Padang and how they affect your baggage.

Domestic flights to Padang

If you connect through Jakarta, you will usually be on an Indonesian domestic carrier. Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Batik Air and Citilink all apply route and fare-dependent baggage rules, and surfboards normally need to be declared as sports or oversized baggage. Citilink, for example, lists surfboards under its sports equipment tariff and accepts them subject to available space.

Because acceptance can depend on hold space, especially on narrow-body aircraft, declare your boards when you book and arrive early at check-in. If your international and domestic flights are on separate tickets, you will need to collect and recheck the board bag in Jakarta.

The ferry from Padang

The Mentawai Fast ferry treats surfboards as oversized luggage and charges for them separately from the passenger ticket. Reported fees are around Rp230,000 for a bag of 1 to 15 kg, Rp460,000 for 16 to 25 kg, and Rp690,000 over 25 kg, per bag and per direction. The passenger fare has been reported at around Rp350,000 one way. Keep the board receipt, because you may need it to collect your bag on arrival.

Many camps meet the ferry and handle the onward speedboat transfer, which has its own space limits. Tell your camp how many board bags you are bringing.

Flights to Sipora

Susi Air has been the airline most consistently reported on the short Padang to Rokot route on Sipora, with a flying time of around 40 minutes and limited weekly frequency. Its published allowance has been around 10 kg of checked baggage plus a small 6 kg carry-on. That is very tight for surf travel, and a normal board bag may not be accepted at all. Ask the airline or your camp about board length, weight and cargo options before relying on this route.

Surf charters

Charter boats leaving from Padang are usually the easiest leg for luggage, because your bags go straight on board. Most operators still set a sensible limit, often two or three boards per guest, because of storage space. Ask before you pack a quiver.

How to pack within the limits

  • Use one coffin bag for two or three boards rather than several single bags, if your airlines charge per piece.
  • Weigh everything at home and stay a kilo or two under the limit to allow for wet wetsuits on the way back.
  • Pack soft items around the boards: towels, rash vests and boardshorts double as padding.
  • Put fins, wax and a ding kit in your main bag so the board bag stays light.
  • Keep valuables and medication in your carry-on.
  • Photograph your boards before check-in in case you need to make a damage claim.

Fitting your surf gear inside the limits

Once you know the strictest weight limit on your route, the next job is deciding what earns a place in the bag. Board bags tend to grow with every trip, and in the Mentawais the extra kilos are charged on more than one leg. These are the items most surfers find worth their weight, and the ones they leave at home.

ItemWorth packing?Weight-saving tip
Long and short-sleeve rash vestsYes, for sun and reefTwo or three cover a long trip; they dry fast
Reef bootiesYes, especially for the first sessionsSplit-toe or thin models pack flat inside the board bag
Surf helmetOptional; useful on shallow, heavy reefsPack it with towels inside the board bag
Mineral sunscreen and zincYes; supplies on the islands are limitedBuy in Padang if your bag is near the limit
Reef-cut first-aid kitEssentialDisinfectant, dressings and tape weigh very little
Spare fins, leashes and ding repairYes; reefs are hard on gearOne spare set of fins and two leashes is usually enough
WetsuitRarely needed; the water is warm year roundLeave it at home and save the weight

Pack soft gear such as rash vests, towels and booties around the boards as padding. It protects the rails and keeps your clothes bag small enough for the lighter legs. For a full clothing and gear list, use a dedicated Mentawai packing checklist and then cut it down to the weight your strictest leg allows. Travelling for just a week? Our 7-day Mentawai surf trip plan shows how a lighter bag speeds up every transfer.

Frequently asked questions

How many boards should I bring to the Mentawais?

Most surfers bring two or three: a daily shortboard, a step-up for bigger days and possibly a spare. Check your charter or camp’s limit first.

Can I take a surfboard on the Mentawai ferry?

Yes. Boards are charged separately as oversized luggage, with reported fees based on bag weight.

Can I fly to the Mentawai Islands with a surfboard?

Small aircraft flying to Rokot have very limited baggage allowances, and a full board bag may not fit. Most surfers use the ferry or a charter boat instead.

What if my board bag is overweight at check-in?

You will usually pay excess fees or have to repack. Weigh your bags at home and leave a margin.

Is it cheaper to rent boards in the Mentawais?

Some camps rent boards, but choice is limited and you cannot count on finding your preferred shape. Most visitors bring their own.

Do I need a wetsuit for the Mentawais?

Usually not. The water is warm all year, so most surfers wear boardshorts or a bikini with a rash vest. A thin long-sleeve top or vest is enough for sun and reef protection.
