Getting there
Mentawai Surf Trip from the United States: Flights, Visa, Timing

In this guide (9 sections)
A Mentawai surf trip from the United States usually means flying to Padang (PDG) in West Sumatra via Jakarta, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, then crossing to the islands by charter boat or the fast ferry. US citizens can get Indonesia’s visa on arrival or e-VOA, reported at IDR 500,000 for 30 days. Allow two travel days each way.
From most of the United States, the Mentawai Islands are about as far as surf travel gets. There is no direct flight, the islands sit off the west coast of Sumatra rather than near Bali, and the last leg is a boat. That distance is part of the appeal. A Mentawai surf trip from the United States rewards a little extra planning, and this guide covers the routings, entry rules, timing, and how to use your travel days well.
Flight routes for a Mentawai surf trip from the United States
Every trip goes through Padang’s Minangkabau International Airport (PDG). The practical question is which hub you connect through on the way.
| Routing | Final connection | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| US to Jakarta (CGK) to Padang | Indonesian domestic flight | Most frequent onward options | Rechecking boards if tickets are separate |
| US to Singapore (SIN) to Padang | Scoot, on the routes identified | Clearing Indonesian immigration in Padang | Low-cost baggage add-ons |
| US to Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Padang | AirAsia or Batik Air Malaysia, on the routes identified | Short final leg | Board bag fees on low-cost fares |
| US to Doha or another hub to Jakarta to Padang | Domestic flight | East Coast travellers | Long total journey with two connections |
| US to Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong or Taipei to Jakarta or Singapore | Domestic or regional flight | West Coast travellers | Overnight connections |
West Coast travellers often route across the Pacific through North Asian hubs, while East Coast travellers sometimes find Middle East routings competitive. Schedules and seasonal routes change, so check the full itinerary, including how your board bag transfers at each connection.
One ticket or several?
Booking the whole journey on one ticket means bags are usually checked through and you are protected if a delay makes you miss a connection. Separate tickets can be cheaper but put the risk on you, and you will normally have to collect and recheck your boards. If you split tickets, leave a long buffer at the connecting airport.
Entry requirements for US citizens
- Visa on arrival or e-VOA: US passport holders are eligible. The fee listed on the official site is IDR 500,000 for an initial 30-day stay, generally extendable once for another 30 days. Applying online in advance through the official Indonesian e-visa site saves time at the airport.
- Passport validity: usually at least six months from arrival, with a blank page.
- Onward ticket: evidence of onward or return travel may be requested.
- Arrival declaration: Indonesia has introduced the All Indonesia arrival system for customs, immigration and health declarations. Use only the official platform and keep the QR code.
Rules change, so check the requirements again a few weeks before you fly. The US State Department currently rates Indonesia at Level 2, exercise increased caution, with separate higher warnings for parts of Papua that do not include West Sumatra.
From Padang to the islands
Once you land in Padang, the last leg depends on how you are surfing.
- Surf charter: most boats leave from Padang and include the transfer from the airport or hotel. Many depart early, so a night in Padang on arrival is common.
- Land camp by ferry: the Mentawai Fast ferry runs to Tuapejat on Sipora in around three and a half to four hours in normal conditions, with other sailings to Siberut and the Pagai group. Camps usually meet the ferry with a speedboat.
- Private speedboat: some camps offer direct speedboat transfers, at extra cost.
Schedules vary by week, so confirm the sailing before you book flights. Our guide to getting to Mentawai from Jakarta walks through the domestic leg in more detail.
When to go from the US
The main surf season runs roughly April to October, with June to September usually the most consistent. That overlaps with the North American summer, which helps with time off but also means busier boats. Shoulder months such as April, May, September and October can mean thinner crowds. Remember that Indonesia is 11 to 15 hours ahead of the continental US depending on where you live and the time of year, so give yourself a day to recover from jet lag before your first serious session.
How long to stay
With two travel days each way, a 10 to 12 night surf trip is a common choice from the US. Shorter trips work, but a big share of your time goes on getting there. Longer stays give you a better chance of catching a good swell. If one wave is the reason for the trip, such as the famous Pagai left covered in our Macaronis surf trip guide, build in extra days so you are there when the swell and wind line up.
| Total trip | Surf days (approx.) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| 9 to 10 days door to door | 5 to 6 | Possible, but tight |
| 14 days door to door | 9 to 10 | Common sweet spot |
| 18 days or more | 13 or more | Best odds of good swell |
Money, phones and practical details
- Bring some cash in Indonesian rupiah or US dollars for the surf levy if your operator asks for cash, and for tips. ATMs are reliable in Padang but limited on the islands.
- Mobile coverage is patchy beyond the main towns. Read our guide on Mentawai internet and phone coverage before you rely on your phone.
- Board bags can cost more than you expect across three flights; see our post on Mentawai surf trip luggage limits.
