A Mentawai surf trip from Europe usually means flying to Padang on Sumatra with one or two connections, often via Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, then taking a fast ferry or charter boat. EU and UK citizens can generally use Indonesia’s visa on arrival or e-VOA. Allow about two travel days each way and arrive in Padang a day early.

The Mentawai season lines up neatly with the European summer, which is one reason so many surfers from the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal and Scandinavia make the trip. A Mentawai surf trip from Europe is long, but it is not complicated once you understand the pieces. This guide walks through flight routings, visas, timing, boards and a realistic day-by-day calendar so your mentawai adventure starts on time.

Mentawai surf trip from Europe: getting to Padang

There are generally no nonstop flights from Europe to Padang’s Minangkabau International Airport (PDG). Most surfers use one of these routings:

RoutingHow it worksThings to know
Europe to Jakarta, then domestic to PadangLong-haul to Jakarta (CGK), then a frequent domestic flightYou clear immigration in Jakarta; on separate tickets you collect and recheck bags
Europe to Kuala Lumpur, then direct to PadangLong-haul to KUL, then a direct regional flight, such as AirAsiaOften convenient; check baggage rules on budget carriers
Europe to Singapore, then to PadangLong-haul to SIN, then a regional flight when scheduledDirect services can be limited and seasonal
Via a Gulf or Istanbul hubDoha, Dubai or Istanbul, then on to Jakarta or Kuala LumpurTwo connections; good fares but long total travel time

Airlines and schedules change often, so check your exact dates. If you combine separate tickets, leave generous connection times and remember that a self-transfer means collecting your board bag, possibly clearing immigration and checking in again.

Visa and entry for EU and UK travelers

Citizens of EU countries and the UK are generally eligible for Indonesia’s Visa on Arrival, which can also be applied for online in advance as an electronic visa on arrival (e-VOA). Key points at the time of writing:

  • The fee is around IDR 500,000 for a 30-day stay.
  • It can usually be extended once for another 30 days.
  • Your passport should normally be valid for at least six months from arrival, and you may be asked for an onward or return ticket.

Rules and fees change, so check the official Indonesian immigration e-visa portal before you travel. Applying online in advance can save time on arrival.

When European surfers should go

The main Mentawai season runs roughly April to October. June to August usually brings the most powerful swells, and that matches European school and summer holidays, so it is also when boats and camps are busiest. Booking about a year ahead for July and August is wise.

If you can travel outside the holidays, May and September often give a better balance of swell and fewer surfers. April and October are shoulder months with variable but often fun surf. November to March is smaller and wetter, which can suit beginners or longboarders looking for quieter lineups.

A realistic calendar for a 10-night trip

  1. Day 1: Depart Europe on an evening or overnight flight.
  2. Day 2: Connect in Asia and arrive in Padang. Stay overnight.
  3. Day 3: Early transfer to the port and fast ferry or charter departure.
  4. Days 3 to 13: Surf.
  5. Day 13: Return to Padang and stay overnight.
  6. Days 14 and 15: Fly home, landing in Europe the same day or the next morning.

In practice, that makes a 10-night trip a 15 or 16-day holiday. Many Europeans prefer 12 nights in the islands to make the long journey worthwhile.

Jet lag and the first sessions

West Sumatra is on Western Indonesia Time (UTC+7), several hours ahead of most of Europe. Arriving a day early in Padang gives you a night’s sleep before the crossing. Take your first sessions easy: paddling fitness, sun and reef all take a little getting used to, and fatigue is when people misjudge waves.

Boards, bags and baggage

Long-haul carriers and regional or domestic airlines often have different rules for surfboards. A board bag that flies free to Kuala Lumpur may cost extra on the next flight to Padang. Check each leg, keep receipts, and weigh your bag before you leave. Our post on Mentawai surf trip luggage limits explains common limits and how to pack a quiver.

Most surfers bring two to three boards, including a step-up for bigger days, plus spare fins, leashes, wax, reef booties and a basic repair kit.

Health and insurance

Get travel insurance that covers surfing and medical evacuation, because the islands are remote. Talk to a travel clinic well before departure about vaccinations and malaria prevention. Our guide to Mentawai malaria risk covers the basics, but your doctor’s advice comes first.

Choosing where to surf

European surfers often split between two styles. Experienced surfers who want to follow the swell usually pick a charter boat. Couples and mixed groups often prefer a land camp. If you want to keep transfers short, Sipora is close to the ferry port at Tuapejat; see our Sipora Island surf trip guide. If one wave is on your list above all others, our Macaronis surf trip page explains how to plan around it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Europe to the Mentawais?

Usually around two days door to door, including flights, a connection, a night in Padang and the crossing. The return is similar.

Do I need a visa from the UK or the EU?

Most EU and UK citizens can use the visa on arrival or apply for the e-VOA online. Check the official immigration portal before you fly, because rules change.

Is it better to fly via Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur?

Both work. Jakarta has many domestic connections to Padang. Kuala Lumpur has direct flights to Padang with regional carriers. Compare total time, baggage costs and connection risk.

When is the best time for Europeans to go?

May, June and September are popular for strong surf with fewer boats than July and August. If you can only travel in the summer holidays, book early.

Should I book flights before the boat?

Confirm your charter or camp dates first, then book flights that land in Padang at least a day before departure.
